Found something in the house and not sure what it is? Upload a photo below and enter your email. The checker looks at it and emails you back what it most likely is and what to do next. Every photo also comes to me, so I can look at it myself.

It works for insects and spiders, droppings, dust or powder, mud, marks and damage to timber. If it's a termite, it will try to name the kind too. For termites, my termite ID guide goes into more detail.

Your photo and email: We keep the photo you upload and the email you give us. We may use the photo to improve the checker. We don't share either with anyone. If you want yours deleted, email nick@activetermitecontrol.com and I'll delete it.

Getting a photo that works

  • Close and in focus. Get as close as your phone will focus and tap the screen on the subject.
  • Good light. Daylight, or a torch held to one side.
  • Something for size. A coin or a ruler next to it helps.
  • Insects from above. For droppings, dust or marks, include a bit of what they're sitting on.
  • One thing per photo. Send a second photo for a second problem.

What it can and can't tell you

The answer is always a likely match, to be confirmed with an inspection. A photo can't tell you whether a pest has spread through the house or how big the problem is.

Spiders: don't handle them. Some Sydney spiders are dangerous, including funnel-webs. If anyone may have been bitten by a funnel-web, call 000 straight away.

Bites, rashes or anything on skin: see a doctor or pharmacist. The checker doesn't answer those.

Common questions

Is the photo check free?
Yes. You only pay if you book a treatment or an inspection.

How quickly do I get the answer?
Usually within a minute or two. If it hasn't arrived, check your spam folder.

What happens to my photo?
We keep the photo and your email, and may use the photo to improve the checker. We don't share either. Email nick@activetermitecontrol.com if you want yours deleted.

What if it turns out to be termites?
Leave them alone and don't spray. Book a termite inspection so I can find where they're coming from and how far they've got.

Need it treated?

A general pest treatment covers spiders, large cockroaches and ants. It's $270 for a single storey or $300 for a two storey home within 7 km of Earlwood, and $50 more further out. Other pests, like small cockroaches, bed bugs or rodents, need a different treatment, so call me for those. Termite inspections are from $330 (single storey) or $350 (two storey).
