Spider Control in Sydney

Spiders are covered by my general pest treatment, along with large cockroaches and ants.

Safety first

Don't handle spiders. Some Sydney spiders are dangerous, including funnel-webs. If there's any chance it's one, keep away, keep kids and pets clear, and call 000 straight away if anyone is bitten.

Where spiders turn up around the house

• Eaves, window frames and screens, where webs catch insects drawn to the lights.
• Garages, sheds and storerooms, in the corners and behind stored boxes.
• Under outdoor furniture, pot plants and play equipment.
• In the garden, in shrubs, along fences and under rocks and timber.
• Inside, usually having wandered in through a gap under a door or a torn screen.

What I treat on the day

The spray goes where spiders sit:

• the eaves
• around the windows and doors
• along the exterior walls and the fence line
• garages, sheds and other outdoor buildings
• clotheslines and under outdoor furniture
• inside, along all the skirting boards

Before I arrive

• Pets: keep them away from the spray while it dries. Taking them for a walk for an hour is easiest.
• Washing: don't hang any on the line.
• Dog bowls: bring them inside, away from the areas being sprayed.
• Skirting boards: clear anything stacked against them so I can get to them.

Cutting down on spiders between treatments

• Knock down webs around the eaves and windows regularly.
• Keep outside lights off when you don't need them. They draw the insects spiders feed on.
• Fix torn fly screens and gaps under doors.
• Shake out shoes, gloves and clothes left outside before you put them on.
• Wear gloves when gardening or moving things in the shed.
